E Criterium  Championship report.

The fact that the E category  Criterium Championships finished in a bunch sprint hides the fact that this was an action packed race from start to finish .

Held over 30 laps of a mile long circuit within the Birmingham Business Park on a flat circuit, drying conditions at the start after earlier light rain and with nothing technical to negotiate meant that several riders were going to have a good crack at winning this Championship title.

At the completion of the first neutralized lap, the racing started immediately with Don Parry attacking and stretching everybody out into a long line. This set the pattern for ther race with numerous attacks going . Noteable among the regular attackers were Dave Woods who when not just up the road was working hard on the front chasing others. BC President Brian Cookson looking very lean had several short lived spells off the front as did Alistair Cameron . All the above taking off at the sign of a slowing in pace.

Most dangerous break came about 2/3 distance when  a break  of 2 ? went away rapidly ( sorry , not sure who it was) to be quickly joined by Dave Pollard  and Vicky Thomas . These worked well for perhaps 4 laps and with everybody in the bunch looking at each other, it was again Don Parry who re ignited the bunch with others then joining in and that break was doomed.

Into the final laps of the race and several times Chris Gunter gave it everything , each time he was caught, and after a short recovery he did the same again and was finally swamped in the bunch with about  ½ mile to go as Terry Devine made an early wind up for the finish .The finish was into a slight headwind and very slightly uphill with Kemp taking the lead as all the sprinters took over the front of the bunch.

At the line it was Kemp from Martin Hackley and Gordon Smith with everybody else close behind.

Thanks to Nick Selibas and all his helpers for a slick day of racing including having all the prizes presented so quickly after the finish.

F G Crit Championship Report

The championships were run as two events, the E categories at 11:45 and the FGH cats starting at 1:30pm. Both events over 30 laps of a 1 mile circuit (the race distance posted as 50km.) Another weekend where the weather was initially wet then overcast, a light southerly breeze and the sun coming out for the start and lasting during the event.

Again full marks to Nick Selibas  and his team for the splendid organisation and very well marshalled, with mobile motor cycles patrolling  the events.

For the FGH race starting last, the weather had come good the early rain had ceased and the wet roads now dry. The race turned out to be relatively tactical as is usual with combined category championships.

It was my first time on this circuit and I found that it was very similar to Darley Moor where I have a good success record. My main (G cat) rivals were, in my humble opinion, Ken Haddon and Roly Crayford, with respect to the others who I do not know too well. The start was for once fairly steady and I was able to get into race mode quickly and comfortably.  I tried one or two attacks to test the water and found that I was riding easily, there being no sharp corners to sprint out of it was easy to get on top of the gear. At around lap 12 I tried a hard attack and got clear for two laps, this gave me the confidence for later, having decided that my only chance of success was to get away from Ken and Roly. So using a Les West tactic I tried several more feints which although not  succeeding  clearly laid out my intentions. Approaching the final two laps I put in one final attack and opened up a good gap gambling on the fact that none of the F cats would chase seriously as they would be looking  after their own interests.  Murray Kirton tried to get across followed by Ken and Rowley but this failed to pull me in so on the last lap I was able to time trial to a solo victory, the second and third riders to finish were Ken Haddon and Roly Crayford.  Winning the F cat race despite a long sprint from clubmate Mike Allen was Lance Ravenhill  who came off Mike’s wheel with 100m. to go followed into  third place by Dave Gretton.

Apologies if I have not accurately described all the action and I have written this from my own point of view  as a G cat.   As I have previously stated  I consider that my sprint is not good enough to get the better of riders such as Ken so I had to resort to a typical long shot. These efforts are hard and only pay off  rarely but when they do are very satisfying.
